Just That One Question
“Have you ever been told you have PCOS?” Her eyes grew huge in her face, she took a deep breath in and said, “I have felt like I have for a long time, but no one would listen to me”. There it was. The one question that addressed the “purple elephant” in my patients’ life.
She came to see me because she needed a new provider. Within a few minutes, she shared how frustated she was with her weight. Telling me that she had always been “a bigger girl”, but recently just could not loose weight. A good nutritious diet was strictly being followed, presenting me with her app to prove it. She was working out at the gym doing HIIT and strength training. She ditched intense cardio when her research showed it would do nothing to help loose weight. At 26 years old, she felt like an old lady.
What a horrible feeling to have, as if all your effort is wasted. No matter how much she exercised or how clean her diet she just couldn’t see the inches coming off her mid-section. We chatted some more about the myths of PCOS and how we could work together to address what I believed was truly holding her back - Insulin Resistance. Fast forward 3 months, a few labs and some new medications to help her out, and her energy is improving, she’s down a pant size and, IMO most importantly, she believes in her ability to take power over her own body. She’s proudly still curvey, but feeling more herself. I am so thankful that we had our little chat.
